For the first time in a century and a half, there are more men than women in Malta, a new national new census has found.

Up until the previous census which was held a decade ago, Malta’s population included more females than males. But since 1967, the gap between the two sexes began to narrow.

“Over the past 10 years, the male population grew at a faster pace when compared to the female population, with an increase of more than 62,000 males or 30.1% over the last census compared to an increase of 18.9% in females,” the preliminary findings read.

“As a result, this is the first census population with a majority at 52% of males over females resulting in a sex ratio, namely the number of females expressed per 1,000 males, of 924.”

Although the same distribution by sex was observed in the regions of Malta and Gozo, some discrepancies emerged at a district level.

The western district has an almost even share of males, at 50.6%, and females at 49.4%, as opposed to the southeastern district where the widest gap was observed, with 52.5% of males and 47.5% of females.

In Marsa, the male population increased by 31%, while for the female population there was a 2.7% drop in the last ten years.

The Census of Population and Housing 2021 was the 18th in a line of national censuses conducted since 1842.

The census is a nationwide project held every 10 years and involves enumerating all residents and dwellings in Malta at a specific point in time, referred to as Census Night.
