Malta’s population has more than doubled in the last 100 years, amounting to just over half a million at 519,562 at the time of the Census.

This was revealed in volume one of the 2021 Census of Housing and Population final report, which was released today by the National Statistics Office.

The Census was gathered on 21st November 2021, ten years since the last time the population’s data was collected.

As a result, Malta remains the most densely populated country in the EU with 1,649 residents per square kilometre.

Sliema is the most densely populated locality with 15,167 persons per square kilometre, which is 139 times higher than the EU average, while Għasri is the least with 104 persons per square kilometre – the latter being the only locality that is comparable to the EU average.

The new census has also found that the largest three localities are San Pawl il-Baħar, Birkirkara, and Mosta.
