Malta Chamber Warns Labour: ‘Rallies Only Foment The Current Insecurity’

The Malta Chamber of Commerce has called on all political parties to cancel their upcoming political activities and “exercise maximum caution and responsibility” while the country was facing “one of the most challenging times in recent history”.

“Political rallies will only foment the current insecurity, which in turn will reflect negatively on the international stage.”

“In the past days, Malta’s reputation has been severely compromised. It is now time to act responsibly and ensure that justice is served. Only in this way will the country be able to calm down, heal and move forward,” the Chamber said.

While the statement called on all political parties to show political maturity, it is only the Labour Party who is yet to cancel this Sunday’s upcoming event in Fgura.

The Nationalist Party “postponed” their national protest hours after it was initially announced following widespread outrage, citing “national interest”.

Yesterday protests starting turning into civil disobedience after police erected blockades in front of Parliament and Castille Square.

Protestors blocked roads in Floriana, forcing officers to divert traffic away from the area.

Activists will continue calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat following the arrest of his former Chief of Staff Keith Schembri in connection with the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the resignation of Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, and the self-suspension of Economy Minister Chris Cardona.

Mizzi and Cardona remain Labour Party MPs.
