Malta Courts Suspended Until Further Notice Amidst COVID-19
All court proceedings will be suspended as of today as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Justice and Equality Minister Edward Zammit Lewis announced the news last night following discussions held with Chief Justice Dr Joseph Azzopardi and President of the Chamber of Advocates Dr Louis De Gabriele.
As of Monday 16th March, all court proceedings will be suspended, except for any urgent cases or where the Court decides otherwise.
The legal notice will remain in effect until revoked by the Superintendent of Public Health.
Prior to the decision being made, the Chamber of Advocates urged authorities to “immediately take the necessary preventive measures in our Courts to control and limit the potential risks from COVID-19 virus” and issued a directive to all lawyers to not attend court.
“The Chamber believes that the current situation is not the ideal one to protect the health of all those involved including lawyers, the judiciary, the Court employees and the general public and this situation needs to be addressed in an immediate and decisive manner.”
