The Malta Developers Association (MDA) has responded to yesterday’s tragic death of a construction worker in Sliema by calling for a system of registration for workers in the industry.
“Such qualifications would not only reflect the skill and aptitude of the worker concerned but would also ensure that workers undergo a basic course on health and safety as part of the requirements for registration,” the MDA said. “This should not only apply to workers employed with contractors but, more so, to those who carry out work as self-employed people.
“Moreover, legal obligations and responsibilities on hiring qualified people would apply to anyone carrying out work, irrespective of whether one is a developer, a contractor or a private citizen.”
Following yesterday’s death of 26-year-old Akram Almshay, several people took to social media to demand more rigorous health and safety measures at construction sites. Some pro-active citizens also took the time to take photos of construction workers working in precarious conditions, hoping to raise enough awareness so as to prevent yesterday’s incident from repeating itself.
While the MDA expressed its sorrow at Akram’s death, it made sure to point out that its academy organises voluntary courses on health and safety procedures.
