Malta Elected To UN Security Council For Two-Year Mandate
Malta has been elected to the UN’s Security Council, Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced.
Malta will be a non-permanent member of the council, after securing 97% of the vote. The vote means Malta will have a two-year mandate on the council.
Switzerland, Ecuador, Japan and Mozambique were also elected.
The Security Council is the chief UN body that deals with peace and security. It has five permanent members, the US, the UK, France, Russia and China, while there are ten elected for two-year terms.
Malta joins at a crucial time, amid major concerns over the Russian government’s invasion of Ukraine and other conflicts across the globe.
“Serving on the Council of UN provides Malta a significant opportunity to contribute to the maintenance of global peace and security,” Abela said.
