Malta’s government says it will “analyse” today’s landmark court ruling ordering the annulment of a controversial deal and the return of the three Vitals-Steward-run hospitals on the island.

It has also committed itself to make sure that the hospitals continue running and patients’ services continue.

“The government refers to the ruling of the Chief Justice of the Civil Court, which was issued today by Judge Francesco Depasquale regarding the concession of hospitals,” the government said in a public statement.

“The government is analysing this ruling, and in any case, it ensures that the national interest, the employment of all workers, and all the services that patients receive from the hospitals, which are the subject of the concession referred to in the mentioned ruling, are protected,” it continued.

Judge Francesco Depasquale today ordered the annulment of the deal and the return of the three hospitals to the government within the next three months, with all costs to be borne by Steward Malta.

Depasquale ruled there was fraud in three stages of the process – before the original contract with Vitals was signed, during the deal itself and after Steward took over.
