Malta Government Seeking Chief AI Officer – Starting Salary Only €46,000 A Year

Malta’s government is seeking a Chief AI Officer to coordinate all AI-related projects within the public service.

However, they are only offering a salary that will be pegged to Scale 3 of the civil service salary grades. In practice, that means their annual salary will only be €45,904 next year, rising to €51,038 by 2030 as part of a renegotiated collective agreement for the civil service.

While it is a relatively high salary for the civil service, it is very low compared to several tech jobs on offer in the private sector.

In fact, people in private tech jobs with much lower levels of responsibility earn significantly more than what the Chief AI Officer can be expected to earn after five years.

And the Chief AI Officer will have a crucial role in coordinating all public administration projects that involve AI. This is part of a wider push by the government to embrace AI within the public and private sectors, with Prime Minister Robert Abela making it clear that he believes this technology will play a crucial role in the future economy.

In its 2026 Budget, the government even pledged to invest €100 million to accelerate Malta’s adoption of AI and digital technologies.

Given the importance being given to AI, the government might need to consider offering a more competitive salary to the person who will be tasked with overseeing its national implementation if it wants to attract top talent to the position.
