It’s just day one of the international Small Nations Games, and Malta can already celebrate a successful start as they nab an impressive six medials right from the get-go.
Held in Montenegro, this is the 18th edition of the competition that sees countries from across the globe compete in a variety of sporting events.
The first hours of the competition saw #TeamMalta take home bronze medals in the 200m butterfly (Mikhail Umnov), 200m individual medley (Mya Azzopardi) and the 4x100m relay (Mya Azzopardi, Francesca Falzon Young, Martina Valletta, and Michelle Van Rooyen).
Clinching second place silver, we had Jeremy Saywell in Judo (66kgs), Harry Stacey in the 100m freestyle and Andrew Chetcuti, Matthew Galea, Dylan Cachia together with Stacey in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Last year the games were held in San Marino, and Malta walked away with 29 medals – four gold, nine silver and 16 bronze
After a 20-year absence from our shores, Malta will finally host the biennial Small Nations Games in 2023.
