Malta Has Lowest Rate Of Plastic Packaging Recycling In EU

Malta has the lowest rate of recycling for plastic packaging in the entire EU, official figures show.

According to new figures published by Eurostat, around 10% of all plastic packaging in 2020, which includes containers, bottles, and bags, is recycled in Malta.

That’s well below the EU average of 38% and miles away from the Netherlands, which tops the list at 57%.

Worryingly, plastic packaging waste is growing across the block, increasing by 23% per inhabitant between 2010 and 2020. That’s roughly an increase of 6.5kg of plastic per person.

The amount being recycled has increased by 32% but counts for little given the increase in use.

Malta’s waste issue is well documented with NGOs picking up the mantle in the fight to curb plastic pollution.

The government has tried its part with awareness campaigns, but it appears to be counting for very little.

If you’re looking for ways to shift plastic out of your life, here’s an easy guide to help you on your way.

What can be done to improve recycling in Malta?
