Malta Hosts Key Clean Energy Event As Part Of EU Push For Net-Zero By 2050

Xjenza Malta recently hosted a stakeholder event to showcase the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), which welcomed key figures from the research and innovation community, international CETP representatives, and leading experts in the clean energy sector.
The CETP plays a central role in the European Union’s transition to clean energy under Horizon Europe, supporting the development and deployment of innovative energy technologies and systems.
Its mission includes fostering innovation ecosystems and showcasing clean energy solutions that contribute to the EU’s 2030 renewable energy targets, with the broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Through this event, Xjenza Malta reinforced its commitment to clean energy research and innovation, while reaffirming Malta’s active participation in this strategic European partnership. Xjenza Malta has already awarded EUR 430 000 to projects involving Maltese researchers that are developing tools to help grid operators prevent power outages, as well as building a smart energy platform using AI and blockchain to support affordable and sustainable energy use in communities.
The event also highlighted Malta’s efforts to promote regional collaboration across the Mediterranean and align national priorities with the EU’s broader climate agenda. It facilitated meaningful dialogue and synergy between national and international stakeholders, strengthening Malta’s role as a bridge between local innovation and European clean energy goals.
During the event, the CETP Transnational Joint Call 2025 for research and innovation projects was launched. With a budget of €500,000 per project, Xjenza Malta invited all stakeholders to apply and take full advantage of the networking opportunities made possible by the event.

In his address, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti said the government, through Xjenza Malta, is building bridges between local researchers, innovators, and enterprises and their European and international counterparts.
“Malta was among the first supporters of this partnership, having allocated around €3.5 million towards Transnational Joint Calls, which are already producing tangible results,” he said. “Today’s event is more than just a meeting — it’s a platform for new partnerships and bold ideas. I encourage all present stakeholders to engage actively, especially with international partners.”

Dr. Tonio Portughese, Chairman of the Xjenza Malta Consultative Committee added, “It is an opportunity for the Clean Energy Transition Partnership to better understand Malta’s needs, challenges, and opportunities, as well as its strengths and areas for improvement. The event serves as a platform to highlight the role of local stakeholders and ensure their voices are heard in shaping the future of clean energy in our country. Through CETP’s support, Malta can serve as a testing ground and a leader in bringing forward innovative solutions that would serve the region and the EU as a whole.”
The CETP Transnational Joint Call for 2025 is open until 9 October 2025.
