‘Malta Is My Country’: Award-Winning Jordanian Author Walid Nabhan Offered New Arts Council Job
Jordanian award-winning author Walid Nabhan has reversed his decision to leave Malta after the Malta Arts Council intervened and offered him a job.
“I am not going back to my country because Malta is my country. I still have much to contribute here, and there is still much for me to gain,” he stated on Facebook.
Lovin Malta contacted Nabhan to inquire about the reason behind this change of heart. He responded, “I was offered a position by the Malta Arts Council to work within its translation and internationalisation department.”
“In essence, I will be promoting Maltese literature on the international stage,” he elaborated.
At the end of February, the author announced his plans to depart the country after finding himself unemployed and struggling to sustain himself financially.
Having lived in Malta for 35 years, Nabhan recounted how a series of unfortunate events, including a fire at his residence, coupled with the termination of his contract with the Book Council, led him to contemplate leaving.
Nabhan revealed that his social media post “apparently reached Minister Owen Bonnici.” He was offered a position within his ministry some time after he shared his story.
“He didn’t want me to leave,” Nabhan acknowledged, confessing that he too had reservations about departing the country.
On Tuesday, Nabhan reached an agreement with authorities, securing a part-time role wherein he will collaborate with the council’s internationalisation team to facilitate connections between Malta’s artistic community and the Arab world.
He is set to receive a salary of approximately €20,000 for his services.
