Malta Link-Up? Italy-Sicily Bridge Is Officially On The Peninsula’s Agenda

A bridge between Italy and Sicily, effectively linking up Malta to the entire European continent with a mere ferry ride, is officially on the Italian’s government agenda.

“Over the next five years, starting work on the construction of the Strait Bridge is one of my goals,” Italy’s infrastructure minister Matteo Salvini said just days into his new role’s nomination.

“The shipment of ferries, in addition to pollution and waste of time, costs people more in a year than it would cost to build the bridge.”

This transformative idea is nothing new, with a simulation showing what the bridge would look like has already been whipped up back in 2001.

Others have also previously echoed this “ancient dream”.

The huge development connecting the Italian peninsula with the biggest island in the Mediterranean comes at an immense cost and includes some risks.

The bridge would cost several of billions of euros and it would be placed in one of the areas with the highest seismic risks in Europe.

Nonetheless, Salvini had said he still wants to connect Messina and Reggio Calabria, and it looks like kicking it off in the next half a decade is high on his agenda.

Do you think this is a good idea both for Malta and Italy?
