Maltese Man Buys ‘Ultra-Rare’ Bottle Of Wine For Record-Setting €66,700
A private buyer from Malta has purchased an “ultra-rare” bottle of wine for £57,000 (€66,700).
Auction host Cult Wines revealed that the wine, a large-format bottle of Olivier Bernstein Romanée-St-Vivant 2017, has set the new benchmark for the price for the Romanée-St-Vivant grand cru.
The buyer, who is a 37-year-old entrepreneur from Malta, purchased the wine with just two minutes left on the auction. The buyer did not want to be named.
“Given the scarcity of top Burgundy wines it comes as no surprise that this jeroboam achieved such a staggering sum, putting it firmly in the company of iconic producers like Domaine Leroy and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti,” CEO and cofounder of Cult Wines Tom Gearing said.
“Despite the global macro-environment, we continue to see high demand from investors and collectors around the world to acquire the rarest and most exclusive fine wines.”
A non-fungible token (NFT) was issued to the buyer of the jeroboam, to help guarantee the provenance and authenticity of the wine, as well as certify ownership.
