Malta Philharmonic Orchestra CEO Sigmund Mifsud has been charged with evidence tampering after he allegedly instructed his employees to keep quiet about a sexual harassment case.

Mifsud, who has run the national orchestra since 2013, was also charged with using moral and/or psychological violence and causing an alleged victim to fear violence.

He has been remanded in custody after magistrate Nadine Lia turned down his request for bail.

The allegations were first revealed by The Shift News, which said that a former female MPO employee was forced to resign due to “excessive stress caused by abuse and multiple incidents of sexual harassment”.

The victim filed a criminal complaint with the police and alleged that these incidents took place at the office and during work functions.

According to the report, the former employee made several verbal reports that went unnoticed, which then led to her resignation.

Times of Malta reported that Mifsud had allegedly summoned all MPO employees to a meeting to warn them not to speak out about the sexual harassment allegations.

Last week, a 31-year-old male MPO employee pleaded guilty to sexually harassing a female colleague, who reportedly resigned due to “excessive stress”.

He was given a one-year imprisonment suspended for four years and placed under a five-year restraining order. The male employee’s name cannot be published by court order.
