Malta Places Second For Top Healthy Life Expectancy In Europe
A new index ranking countries by the number of years a person is expected to live without a disability or activity limitation has placed Malta right near the top of the list.
Eurostat’s ranking, which takes into consideration one’s ‘healthy life years’, placed Malta in second place, right behind Sweden.
The data, collected in 2020, gave the island an average score of 70.45, just below Sweden’s 72.75.

Trailing Malta are Italy, Spain and Ireland, but these countries all did not manage a score of 70 years, hitting instead the mid 60s.
Health Minister Chris Fearne praised the index, saying: “The facts that count: Malta at the top end for Healthy Life Expectancy in Europe. Well done to our healthcare professionals.”
Meanwhile, Croatia, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia brought the rear, with their healthy life years at birth decreasing into the mid 50s.
However, before you reach to the pastizzi to celebrate, it’s worth noting that Eurostat also declared Malta to be the most obese country in Europe in another index this very year.
