Malta Police Force Rolls Out New Specialised Tech – The BolaWrap
The Malta Police Force has announced the inclusion of a new tool in their arsenal – the BolaWrap.
The BolaWrap is a type of taser technology that uses a specially designed rope to immobilize a suspect without causing serious harm.
The rope can be fired from a distance of between three and eight meters and is aimed at the suspect’s legs or torso. This causes the person to be subdued and immobilised quickly and safely.
Officers stationed at the Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) and those at Mater Dei Hospital underwent specialised training and are certified to use the new tool.
“Not everyone who is suspected of a crime needs to be subdued with force,” the police said in a statement.
“In certain situations where the police respond today, someone may resist for various reasons and not comply with police orders, but this does not necessarily mean that they will be violent. These individuals may include those who are emotionally unstable, individuals with mental health issues, or people under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.”
“One of the main advantages of the BolaWrap is its ease of use,” explained Inspector Raymond Azzopardi, who lead the training in the use of the BolaWrap.
“It requires minimal training and can be used quickly, which is important in situations where time is critical. The fact that it is a simple tool to use helps our officers effectively and safely subdue suspects. Another advantage of the BolaWrap is its versatility. It can be used in various situations where another device may not be suitable.”
