Alcohol consumption is an important measure of a country’s culture and social behaviour, and can reveal interesting tidbits about a population.

But what does the latest data say about Malta’s alcohol consumption compared to the rest of Europe?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the latest published in 2021, Malta ranks second lowest in alcohol consumption among European countries, with just 8.3 litres per capita of pure alcohol consumed in 2019.

In comparison, the average alcohol consumption in Europe is around 11.3 litres per capita.

Latvia tops the list with a consumption of 13.2 litres per capita, while Lithuania follows closely behind with 12.8 litres per capita.

This news might come as a surprise to some, especially when you hear about the record trays of shots being consumed in Paceville.

Either way, when compared to our European neighbours, Malta’s alcohol consumption per capita remains on the lower side – at least statistically.
