Malta Records 27 Suicides In 2023 With Men Being The Vast Majority

In 2023, 27 individuals died by suicide, with men significantly outnumbering women.

Following a parliamentary question by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ, Health and Active Aging Minister Jo Etienne Abela disclosed that there were 27 suicides in Malta and Gozo in 2023.

The majority of suicide victims, 24, were male, while the other three were women.

Abela detailed the data, breaking it down by month, gender, and age of the victims. 

The highest suicide rates were recorded in September and October, with four cases each.

Last year, 14 men and two women aged under 45 died by suicide.

Meanwhile, there were seven men and one woman who were aged between 45 and 64, and three men aged over 65.

Attard Previ further inquired about suicides among those under 18, to which Abela confirmed there were two cases.

Responding to another parliamentary questions, Abela proceeded to give details on suicides in Malta between the years 2013 and 2023.

The past 11 years have seen a staggering total of 292 suicides, with a peak of 35 cases in 2021.

Persons who are in crisis can approach the Accident and Emergency department at Mater Dei Hospital or Primary Health Department and seek help from Mental Health Service professionals.
