Malta Should Enshrine Anti-Ageism In Its Constitution, Labour CEO Proposes
Labour CEO and MP Randolph Debattista has urged Malta to update its Constitution to safeguard people from ageism.
“People of an advanced age don’t only care about pensions and health, and they should enjoy the same rights as younger people in society do,” Debattista said following a meeting of the Council of Europe’s equality committee.
“Let’s seriously fight ageism, discrimination against older people that is somewhat institutionalised.”
As an example, Debattista questioned why car insurance companies charge a higher premium to older people “when the majority of road accidents involve younger people”.
He also urged the state to do more to safeguard the sexual rights of older people, warning that menopause remains a taboo topic.
Debattista went on to back a proposal by PL MEP Cyrus Engerer, who is also his partner, for the EU to appoint a European Commissioner for the Elderly.
“The time has come for Malta to amend its Constitution to safeguard people from ageism, just as we updated it over other issues,” he said. “This is a proposal that the Veterani Laburisti have put forward and it makes a lot of sense.”
