Malta Should Legalise Abortion, PL Youth Activist Tells Robert Abela At Open Mic Session

During an open mic session with Prime Minister Robert Abela last night, PL youth activist Maria Ellul urged Malta to legalise abortion.

“If speaking about abortion is political suicide, then politics is not for me,” Ellul – who is secretary general of the PL’s Labour Youths wing – told the Prime Minister.

Warning against turning women’s bodies into “political footballs”, the young activist said that while she wouldn’t personally consider getting an abortion at this stage in her life, other people might be in a different position.

She came out against President Myriam Spiteri Debono’s recent call for a referendum to settle the issue, arguing that the PL doesn’t only legislate in favour of the majority’s wishes but in favour of society as a whole.

“It is hypocritical that we acknowledge that abortions are carried out in Malta but then we don’t offer a safe space for them,” she said. “When I speak to peers from other countries, they look down on us over this issue as though we were a third-world country, when in reality we have progressed so much in recent years.”

“I believe that the Labour Party is the right choice for our country and it has also been progressive, and I hope that this issue isn’t disregarded any longer.”
