Amidst the international outrage and grief over the burning of the Amazon Rainforest, Ireland has threatened that it will oppose the Meroscur trade deal between the EU and South America if Brazil does not act to protect the rainforest.

While over the past few days Maltese youths have been sharing photos of the burning Amazon Rainforest on social media, 16-year-old activist Eve Borg Bonello has pleaded that Malta to follow Ireland’s footsteps

“Malta should take a stand and follow suit”, Borg Bonello said. “Everyone must speak out, if not act”. The young activist went on to say that the Amazon burning “is environmental terrorism, and is an international issue.”

“Climate change and the environment are not red or blue issues, they affect each and every one of us,” Eve continued.

“The Amazon is a lung not just for Brazil, but for the planet” she continued. “Bolsanaro cannot be allowed to pose such a huge threat to the wellbeing of the planet.”

Borg Bonello called upon “the Maltese government and opposition to take a stand.” “Where the environment is involved, there are no political colours. Joseph Muscat and Adrian Delia, please follow in the footsteps of Ireland and France.” she exclaimed.

“Our actions today will affect the world for centuries to come.”

In the post, the young activist not only tagged Maltese politicians like David Casa and Roberta Metsola, but also tagged foreign politicians including French President Emmannuel Macron, Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocaso-Cortez.
