The Prime Minister of Malta, Dr. Robert Abela, has indicated the introduction of new legislation to raise standards for agencies importing foreign workers, as a part of broader policy changes aimed at social mobility. Meanwhile, the Nationalist Party has accused the current government of involvement in bigger financial scandals.

During the radio interview, Dr. Abela stated that the legislation is already well advanced and aims to improve conditions for workers imported to Malta. “The labour market has evolved, and therefore, new standards are needed,” said the Prime Minister. He added that businesses operating on an economic model that disregards worker dignity or economic requirements would face strict actions from the authorities.

In addition to labour laws, Dr. Abela also spoke about the government’s broader economic vision, which includes sustainability and renewable energy projects like wind farms. These projects, he mentioned, were key to ensuring cleaner energy, price stability, and a guaranteed supply for the country, this comes after the recent power cut crisis that has crippled Malta for several weeks during this summer’s heatwaves.

Dr. Abela stated that these are sustainable projects that do not burden the country. He added that the ongoing works at the Ħal Qormi health centre and a new centre in Gozo are proof of the government’s commitment to social well-being, which is only possible through a strong economy.

While the Prime Minister outlined his government’s vision for improved labour conditions and sustainable economic growth, the Nationalist Party issued a strong statement accusing the Labour Government of being mired in financial scandals.

The opposition called for immediate action against those involved in fraudulent activities, including allegations against former Labour deputy Silvio Grixti, who resigned in 2021, and current minister Owen Bonnici. According to the statement, the allegations point to widespread fraudulent claims involving disability benefits and other forms of public funds.

The opposition also emphasised that an investigation is necessary to bring to light the involvement of people from Castille, the Office of the Prime Minister, in these financial scandals.
