Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has just announced that Malta will be sending a number of specialists from the Civil Protection Department to aid in the destruction caused by the major earthquake in Turkey.

This comes just a few hours after a powerful 7.8 earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, causing widespread devastating effects. The death toll is currently at 1,300.

In a statement shared just before noon, Camilleri explained how the team of people had actually been trained in this sector for the last months.

“CPD has offered its help to Turkey after the latest earthquake left multiple people buried in the rubble,” the Minister said on social media.

Meanwhile, mere moments ago, a second earthquake hit Turkey, registering a powerful 7.5 on the Richter Scale.

It is not yet known how many people lost their lives yet, but the death toll has already jumped from just over 300 this morning to more than 1,300, with thousands injured and many others still buried in the rubble.
