Malta’s Traffic Crisis: New Figures Give Fresh Insight Into Worst-Hit Localities And Vehicle-Use
New figures have given fresh insight into Malta’s worsening traffic issues, revealing Malta’s obsession with using their private vehicles and details on the worst-hit localities.
The NSO’s National Household Survey took an in-depth look into commuting in Malta, assessing the situation across one single day, Wednesday 17th November 2021.
On that day, 255,232 left their home either by walk, vehicle or public transport, making a total of 638,456 trips.
Unsurprisingly, using a private vehicle was by far the most popular option, accounting for around 84.3% of all trips, compared to 7% who walked and 5.2% who took the bus.
Malta’s public buses recently became free for all Maltese residents. However, the price point is not the main issue keeping commuters away.
People residing in Malta felt that public buses are simply not punctual enough, while Gozitan residents believe it takes too long to reach their destination.
Mosta, it would appear, is the locality that faces the worst traffic issues in the country.
It recorded the largest amount of daily shopping and personal trips (7,682) and the largest for people returning home (8,780).
Meanwhile, Birkirkara is the top destination for work-related trips at (12,186), while Msida recorded the largest for education-related trips (10,810).
Still, the bulk of all the trips for the day was for commuting (42.2%) – meaning that almost 110,000 people on Maltese roads during peak hours are going to work.
