Malta, Would You Like To Name A Planet?

Article Featured Image

Malta has been given the rare chance of deciding the name of a planet in conjunction with the International Astronomical Union’s 100th anniversary and the astronomical body NameExoWorlds.

The planet, which is approximately 838 light years away from our own home, is roughly seven times heavier than Jupiter but only minimal larger in size

Offering the opportunity to all countries in the world, the project allows nominations for a name to be given to planets and their hosting stars, with the final choices being made via a public vote in each country with the decision being made official by the IAU.

NEW says that the name suggestions should be “of things, people, or places of long-standing cultural, historical, or geographical significance, worthy of being assigned to a celestial object”.

Names cannot be derived from nonsensical things, nor should they focus on individuals, places or events principally known for political, military or religious activities but can also be submitted in Maltese.

Anyone willing to make a suggestion and do so on the NEW site here.
