Malta’s Bus Network Is Getting A Summer Upgrade

If you’re planning to rely on public transport this summer or just want an easier way to hit the beach, Malta Public Transport has just announced a major seasonal update to its bus services. The changes, set to roll out on three key dates, 1st June, 14th June, and 6th July, will include over 250 additional trips per day, improved route frequencies, and new connections to popular destinations across Malta and Gozo.
Starting from 1st June, Gozo will be getting a noticeable boost in service. Route 322, which runs between Mġarr and Marsalforn, will see its frequency improved from every 90 minutes to every 45 minutes. Route 310, operating between Rabat and Marsalforn, will now run every 30 minutes instead of 45. Route 302 will begin serving Ramla Bay on all of its trips, while Route 109 will be extended to reach Lapsi, making it easier for locals and tourists to get to this popular beach spot.
From 14th June, changes will begin to roll out across Malta. Several of the island’s busiest summer routes will run more frequently, including Route 212 (Sliema to Buġibba), Route 221 (Buġibba to Ċirkewwa), Route 222 (Sliema to Ċirkewwa), Route 223 (Buġibba to Għajn Tuffieħa), Route 225 (Sliema to Għajn Tuffieħa), Route 49 (Valletta to Għadira/Armier), and Route 53 (Valletta to Rabat). Routes will also be extended to better connect passengers to top summer destinations: Route 49 will now go all the way to Armier, Route 74 will extend to Blue Grotto, and both Routes 101 and 101B will reach Ġnejna.
While many services are increasing, a small number of routes will see reduced frequency due to lower summer demand. These include Route 61 (Valletta to Żebbuġ), Route 72 (Valletta to Qrendi), and Route 73 (Valletta to Żurrieq), which will have adjusted intervals as of 14th June.
On 6th July, more fine-tuning will be introduced. Routes 212 and 221 will receive further frequency upgrades, and Route 223 will offer additional evening trips on weekdays. As the school year ends, certain scholastic routes will be suspended for the summer months. These include Route X1A (Ċirkewwa to University of Malta), Route 150 (Lascaris to MCAST), and Route 207 (Marsa to Naxxar Higher Secondary). Route 43 (Valletta to Naxxar) will also have a frequency adjustment.
All routes remain part of the free public transport scheme for those using a personalised Tallinja Card. For passengers paying on board, fares during the summer peak (starting 14th June) will be €2.50 when paying by cash or contactless.
Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead as timetables will be updated to reflect these changes. Full schedules and route details are available at publictransport.com.mt and on the Tallinja App.
So whether you’re commuting, beach-hopping or just trying to avoid traffic, this summer’s changes aim to get you where you need to go, faster and more efficiently.
