Malta’s Cost Of Housing And Living Is Largest Barrier To Recruiting Overseas Talent
Malta’s property market and the cost of living have been named by foreign businesses as the number one factor harming their ability to recruit and retain talent from overseas.
In EY’s latest attractiveness survey, conducted among 134 foreign direct investment companies, just over half (51%) of respondents identified the high cost of living as a major barrier to recruiting and retaining talent from abroad, particularly for companies looking to recruit skilled workers.
EY warned that the cost of housing in particular is a “significant challenge” for both expatriate employees and local talent and is limiting Malta’s ability to fill critical positions.
Meanwhile, 41% identified the process and cost in bringing third-country nationals to Malta as a major barrier, while 35% identified challenges faced by expats to build a long-term future in the country, and 34% flagged competition for talent in Malta.
