Malta’s Economy Ministry Gets An Offical Facebook Page After Standards Commissioner’s Report
The Economy Minister has set up its own official Facebook page after a new set of guidelines were released detailing what Ministers can and cannot publish on their personal pages.
Ekonomija was launched yesterday already begun sharing content on its page.
Economy Minister Silvio Schembri was one of five cabinet members selected for the random sampling for the Standard Commissioner’s report into the issue.
The report flagged the “widespread” use of public funds and resources to produce content specifically for ministers’ personal Facebook pages.
Only the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry for Education and Employment, the Ministry for Energy and Water Management, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion had active Facebook accounts by the time Hyzler published his report.
While Schembri has denied wrongdoing, the Standards Commissioner ruled that public resources had been used to produce content for his personal page.
However, just last Friday, Schembri uploaded a ministerial video on his personal page praising Malta as “the best country in the world”, raising questions whether this followed the new guidelines.
The Health Ministry launched its Facebook page yesterday.
