Malta’s Energy Crisis Sees Rising Calls For Miriam Dalli’s Resignation Amidst Power Outages

The local energy sector is currently in a national crisis, one that has seen extended power outages in multiple localities and elicited strong criticism from prominent figures in the political landscape.

Mark Anthony Sammut, PN Spokesperson for Energy and Enterprise, recently took to social media to express his outrage at the situation.

He demanded that Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, who has been an integral part of the energy sector for the past 10 years, take responsibility for the crisis and resign.

Sammut even quoted what Dalli had stated back in 2013, when she infamously said: “power blackouts will be a thing of the past”.

This comes in the wake of significant power cuts across the country, leaving many localities without power for days – as highlighted by Opposition Leader Bernard Grech.

Grech shared accounts of shop owners who lost thousands of euros worth of products due to the extended power cuts, parents struggling to put their children to sleep in the heat and darkness, and elderly individuals trapped in their apartments as the elevators ceased to work.

Both Sammut and Grech criticised the government’s handling of the crisis.

Sammut, in particular, took issue with Dalli’s attempt to assure citizens of sufficient generation capacity.

He highlighted the inconsistency in the minister’s stance, wherein she attributed the problem to heat, not load, while simultaneously advising people to not use air conditioners to avoid increasing the load.

Should Dalli resign over the power outages plaguing Malta during a heatwave?
