Social media has seemingly become the prime tool of communication and debate for Malta’s politicians, in the latest confrontation Environment Minister Jose Herrera has threatened to take action against PN MP Jason Azzopardi for calling him a fraud in a post on Facebook.

Azzopardi had uploaded a photo entitled ‘fraudsters’ showing Herrera with White Flag founder Kristijan Curavić.

White Flag, who provided beaches with a ‘plastic-free’ status, has faced allegations that it was a sham after it charged €25,000 per flag.

It collaborated heavily with Minister Jose Herrera, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, and Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. However, since the allegations, practically all traces of Malta have been erased from the webpages of White Flag International.

Cami Appelgren, who has worked vociferously on the issue, filed a series of freedom of information requests to get to the bottom of the communication between state entities and Curavić. However, these have all been refused.

Azzopardi published the status following Applegren’s article on the Shift News detailing the refusal.

“I am publicly asking for [Azzopardi] to immediately remove the post and words he wrote in my regard.”

“I am doing this being I will not tolerate any comments like these and I am ready to take legal action if it is not removed.”

“The comments show Azzopardi’s lack of courtesy and loyalty against a parliamentary colleague,” Herrera said.
