Malta’s Foreign Minister To Next PM: ‘Don’t Do As Adrian Delia Has Done’

With the race to become the next leader of the Labour Party – and indeed the next Prime Minister of Malta – coming to an end this Sunday, Malta’s Foreign Affairs Minister has given some advice to whoever will be the next leader.

“Do not do as Adrian Delia has done since he became the leader of the party at least,” Carmelo Abela said to Lovin Malta yesterday.

Adrian Delia became Leader of the Nationalist Party in 2017, riding a wave of change within the Nationalist Party. However, since then, the party has splintered into various warring factions, with Delia himself garnering some of the lowest trust ratings for a Maltese politician.

Chris Fearne and Robert Abela are vying for the position of Labour leader following the resignation of Joseph Muscat in the wake of bombshell revelations that his former Chief of Staff Keith Schembri is implicated in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

When asked if he had a preference for the next leader, the Foreign Affairs minister replied that he was in contact with both camps.

“I’ve been invited by both candidates to address their meetings, and I gladly accepted both,” he said. “I went to activities organised by both leaders, but I have to vote for one, I have to choose, so I should have a personal preference as things stand today.”

He then reiterated that “as I did in the past, I will always give my support to the party and the prime minister”.
