Malta’s Inflation Rate Ranks Higher Than EU Average
Malta’s annual inflation rate is currently the joint eighth highest out of EU member states and higher than the EU average, new statistics have shown.
Eurostat figures show that Malta registered a 3.7% inflation rate last month. While this represents a significant decline from the 6.8% registered last year, it is higher than the EU average of 3.1%. When annual inflation in Malta stood at 6.8%, the EU average was 8.6%.

Romania, Estonia, Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Bulgaria registered a higher inflation rate than Malta, while Hungary registered an identical rate.
On the other end of the spectrum, Denmark, Italy (both 0.9%), Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland (all 1.1%) registered the lowest inflation rates.
These figures are valid for January which means they don’t represent the efficacy of the Stabbiltà food price reduction initiative, which only came into force in February.
Should the government be doing more to tackle inflation?
