Malta’s Judiciary Set For Shake-Up After Reshuffling Of Magistrates

Malta’s judiciary is set for a significant shake-up after the Chief Justice reshuffled the duties among magistrates.

According to documents, Magistrate Joe Mifsud has been moved from the Gozitan court to handle tax cases. The move has raised eyebrows in legal circles, particularly after Mifsud was subject to a tax investigation, in which he was reportedly cleared of wrongdoing.

He will also start hearing cases dealing with Malta’s rental laws. He will be replacing Magistrate Noel Bartolo.

Magistrate Rachel Montebello, who made a name for herself presiding over the case involving Yorgen Fenech and the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has been moved away from civil cases and will take over the money laundering cases assigned to Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras and Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech.

Montebello will still continue to preside over the libel cases.

Frendo Dimech, meanwhile, has been assigned to Gozo’s criminal cases, as has Leonard Caruana.

That means that Magistrate Simone Grech will stop taking cases in the lower courts of Gozo and other new cases in the criminal sphere.
