With the number of foreigners in Malta on the rise, an Austrian man has decided to start broadcasting local news in the English language.

“More and more foreigners are coming to Malta but most of them don’t watch any TV because it’s all in Maltese,” Michael Kaden told Lovin Malta. “Our aim is to get the foreigners in Malta more interested in local topics.”

MaltaNews so far airs weekly news bulletins on Facebook on Sundays at 9pm, as well as occasional early morning brief news broadcasts. The broadcasts also include interviews and debates, carried out by French journalist Cyrielle Delmas, on topical issues.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response since launching a few weeks ago, not only from foreigners but from locals too,” Kaden said. “A few Maltese people criticised us for speaking in English but we’re talking about a very small percentage of our readership. I expected a far more negative response to be honest.”

Although still in its infancy, Kaden is already looking to expand and said he is looking into potential collaborations with other established TV stations.
