Malta’s Marzia Makes It To Europe’s Most Wanted Females List After Fleeing Island With ‘Lethal Weapon’ Husband
A Maltese fugitive believed to have fled the island with her explosive-importer partner is being listed among Europe’s most wanted females.
Marzia Marimar Calleja Maatouk joins her husband Jomic Calleja Maatouk on Europol’s list of Europe’s most wanted fugitives where she is wanted for “illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances”.
“In August 2019, Marzia Marimar Calleja Maatouk was stopped by the police and was found to be in possession of narcotics in circumstances denoting that they were not for her personal use. She was subsequently charged in September 2019 with possession with intent to supply,” Europol said.
“Marzia Marimar Maatouk Calleja, was sentenced in July 2023 to 15 months imprisonment and to pay €3,500.00 in court fees and fine. This sentence was appealed, however Calleja Maatouk, absconded from the Maltese islands,” it continued.
“According to latest intelligence Marzia Marimar is accompanied by her husband Jomic Calleja Maatouk, who is also wanted on a different case.”
The couple is believed to have fled the island on a boat, possibly to Serbia.
Her husband, Jomic, first appeared in Maltese media after he began trading luxury items, like Lamborghinis, for Bitcoin in his Qormi store, back in 2017.
In the subsequent years, he was found guilty of attempting to import explosives over the dark web to the island, as well as failing to appear in court and for failing to abide by bail conditions.
He was sentenced to a five-year prison sentence in July, which he appealed, before fleeing the island.
