Malta’s Medical Certificates Have Just Gone Through A Big Change

The validity of medical certificates in Malta has just been extended by a week, from a maximum of seven days to a maximum of 14 days.

The move is intended to make life easier and less costly for patients facing long periods out of work, who currently need a medical certificate for every week they call in sick.

“This is another simplification measure to reduce public inconveniences and make life easier for people,” Social Solidarity Minister Michael Falzon said.

The four types of medical certificates – namely the closed certificate, open-ended certificate, continuation certificate and final certificate – will remain in place, but will be tweaked to cater for this new development.
