Malta’s National Orchestra To Discuss Concert For Daphne Caruana Galizia
The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra has confirmed it will discuss a proposal to organise a concert in honour of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The orchestra’s executive chairman Sigmund Mifsud told Lovin Malta that the potential concert will be discussed by the MPO’s artistic committee when it convenes to discuss its musical schedule for 2019.
He refused to give his own personal opinion on whether such a concert should take place, insisting he wants to leave the decision up to the artistic committee.
The concert idea was originally floated by Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi in a parliamentary question to Culture Minister Owen Bonnici.
“Seeing as the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra threw a concert with the Prime Minister’s favourite songs last February, will it also throw a concert in honour of the life and work of Daphne Caruana Galizia in homage to victims of intolerance to freedom of expression.”
Bonnici confirmed that such a proposal will be considered.
A concert in honour of Caruana Galizia was originally planned a few weeks after the journalist’s assassination last year, but this was scrapped amid reports that musicians from the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra had been threatened by their superiors not to participate.
