Malta’s National Youth Council KNŻ has called upon the Maltese Parliament to declare a climate emergency.

“Youth have always been at the forefront of change,” KNŻ said in a post as it pleaded parliament to declare a climate emergency.

The organisation noted the efforts being done by NGOs on the environment, saying that “over the past few months, we have witnessed tremendous effort from NGOs, movements and even individuals who have been working towards this cause.”

“KNŻ has just demanded that parliament declares a *State of Climate Emergency in Malta* during this year’s edition of the National Youth Parliament.”

As it called upon parliament, the organisation expressed its hope “that youth and other youth organisations will join us in calling for this appeal.”

“In the past, proposals like Vote 16 put forward during the National Youth Parliament were taken on by Parliament, and we trust that this shall be no different.”

This call was made a few weeks after the Amazon fires that shocked the world. Another Maltese organisation, Extinction Rebellion, also wants Parliament to declare a climate emergency.

If Malta does declare such an emergency, it will be the fifth country in the world to do so.
