Overdevelopment, the environment, and pollution have been ranked high in a newly-published opinion poll by Misco – and it seems Malta’s older generation cares more about overdevelopment than youngsters do.

In the new Misco opinion poll, 424 respondents participated across all ages, with the poll gathering data on Maltese citizens’ general and personal concerns.

When asked what Malta’s major problems were in respondents’ opinions, 19.7% said overdevelopment, making it the third most pressing issue.

Another 12% mentioned the environment, while 3.1% mentioned pollution, ranking them as sixth and ninth respectively.

The survey outlines that the concern of overdevelopment in Malta varies across different age groups.

12.9% of those who chose overdevelopment are aged between 16-24, 16.9% are aged between 24 and 34, 20.9% are aged between 35 and 44, 21.4% are aged between 45 and 54, 25.3% are aged between 55 and 64 and 20% are aged over 65.

This means the older generation essentially cares more about overdevelopment on the island than any other group.

As for the environment chosen as a general concern, 15.8% of those aged between 16 and 24 said it was their biggest concern, and while just 5.7% of those aged between 25 and 34 said the same, making it the age group ranking the environment as lowest concern.

As for pollution, the youngest age group cares the most, with 11.4% falling within the 16 to 24 age group, while only a combined 10.1% fell within the 25 to 54 age group.

This survey was conducted among a random sample of 424 respondents. Interviews were conducted using an online methodology. Respondents were selected from Misco’s proprietary online panel. The panel was created using random probability sampling in accordance with best practices.

Data was weighted according to age, gender, and region. Weighting is used to adjust the results of a study to bring them more in line with what is known about a population.
