Malta’s Oldest Woman Maria Farrugia Passes Away At 112
Maria Farrugia, the oldest woman in Malta, has sadly passed away at the age of 112.
Maria, who was born in Mosta on 7th March 1912, broke the record for the longest-living Maltese person on 2nd June 2023, when she turned 111 years, three months, and 25 days.
She officially became Malta’s longest-living person, surpassing Ġanni Schembri, a man born in 1757 who shared her exact birthday.

Maria’s life spanned remarkable events, including, World War I and II, The Sette Giugno Riots, Malta’s Independence in 1964, becoming a Republic in 1974, Freedom Day in 1979 and Malta’s EU Accession in 2004.
She even remembered the days of Malta’s tram system and railways, offering a rare glimpse into the island’s rich past.
Ħamrun’s local council shared its condolences to the family and remembered the last interview with her.
AnneMarie, wife of Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, shared her condolences to the family while also expressing her admiration to Maria’s family for taking care of her.
