Police received 538 domestic violence reports during the first four months of the year.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri revealed the figure following a parliamentary question from PN MP Paula Mifsud Bonnici.

St Paul’s Bay (29), Zabbar (24) and Zejtun (23) are the localities with the most reports so far this year. It should be noted that reports do not necessarily translate to convictions, which are actually very low in Malta.

Recent figures show that over 96% of domestic violence court cases in Malta fail to result in a conviction, with the vast majority of proceedings “exhausted”.

Over the whole of 2021, the police received 1,741 reports. Once again, St Paul’s Bay (124) and Zabbar (83) were the areas with the most reports.

The numbers, however, do fail to tell the whole story with countless victims still living in silence. Reports have certainly increased over the years. However, that might be due to increased awareness of the issue which has led to more victims coming forward.

What do you think of the figures?
