Malta’s Prison Bans Correctional Officer Who Wrote Hitler Biography From Interacting With Inmates

Malta’s prison has taken action against the correctional officer who wrote the Maltese biography on Hitler, banning him from interacting with inmates.

This comes after Ronald Bugeja, who wrote and published the book over a year ago, received backlash over his work after featuring in a televised interview.

After the interview aired, Bugeja was accused of speaking positively towards Hitler, with some even saying that he was apologetic towards the dictator. The interview has since been removed from public platforms, and Bugeja’s book is no longer on sale at local bookstores.

A spokesperson of the Correctional Services Agency told media that “as a preventive measure, all contact with inmates has been removed”, even though Bugeja already had limited action due to overlooking infrastructural projects.

Meanwhile, after the controversy ensued, Lovin Malta spoke with Bugeja, who assured that he was in no way trying to promote Nazi propaganda, as he was accused by local blogger Manuel Delia.

“I’ve been writing for years, and I’ve never written in favour of Nazism,” Ronald Bugeja told Lovin Malta.

“My first ever book, Mill-Glorious Sal-Vitorja, tells the story of my own family in World War Two. It’s about how they suffered under the Nazi attacks on Malta, and includes my great-grandfather Giuseppe Francica’s personal experience during the war, where he lost his life.”

“I condemn all Nazi atrocities, I do not agree with them at all.”

Bugeja was shocked after PEN Malta issued a statement condemning him after his appearance on the book show Ħajjietna Ktieb, hosted by veteran TV presenter John Demanuele, where he discussed his latest book – the first-ever biography of Adolf Hitler in Maltese.
