Malta’s Unemployment Rate At Historic Low, NSO Reports

The National Statistics Office (NSO) released figures indicating a significant decrease in the number of people registering for work.
The data, collected last June, showed a reduction of 79 people to a total of 875, marking the lowest recorded number of unemployed people since the inception of these statistical compilations.
The NSO reported that the decrease was fairly widespread among various demographics, except for those under the age of 20.
“In June, there was a reduction of 63 people on the first part of the unemployment register and another 16 on the second part,” the NSO explained.
Furthermore, the figures showed a marked decline in the number of people with disabilities registering for work. The decrease stood at 23 individuals, bringing the total down to 208 compared to the same period last year.
Men formed the majority of this demographic, accounting for 77.4 percent of the total number of unemployed persons with disabilities.
An intriguing trend emerged when assessing the types of jobs sought after by those on the unemployment register. The NSO observed that clerical support roles were the most popular.
Among men, these jobs accounted for 23.8 percent of the sought-after roles, while a significant 39.0 percent of women on the unemployment register expressed interest in this job category.
The decrease in unemployment numbers is a positive indicator of economic recovery, However, the stagnant unemployment rate among those under 20 years old could indicate potential challenges in the youth employment sector.
What are your takes on these statistics, does it really reflect the economic climate in Malta?
