Malta’s Wardens Strike Suspended After Receiving Improved Financial Package

Industrial action by Malta’s wardens has been temporarily suspended after “a much more advantageous financial package” was offered.

In a social media post, the General Workers Union revealed that it will return to the negotiating table after LESA put the offer forward and would therefore suspend the action.

Malta’s traffic wardens stopped reporting for work at the start of June, refusing to issue tickets amid demands for improved salaries and working conditions.

It proved controversial, with key bodies like the Malta Developers’ Association warning that it was causing a major problem for development. Motorists were also concerned as illegally parked cars and other traffic issues were ignored during the period.

However, it appears that the impasse could soon be over with the GWU set to evaluate the package in the coming days.
