Maltese Authorities Hoping For 1.8 Million Tourists In 2022 Despite Slump At Start Of Year
Authorities are hoping that almost 1.8 million tourists will visit Malta this year, as the country gears to return the tourism sector back to pre-pandemic levels.
Speaking to TVM, Deputy CEO of MTA Carlo Micallef said that the expectation for the summer season are good, even though tourism dropped by around 400,000 in the first four months of the year.
Malta has just started to lift practically all COVID-19 restrictions.
However, vaccine certificates or negative tests are still required to enter the country by flight.
Still, stakeholders, including the Malta International Airport CEO, have warned that a delay in doing so might put Malta at a disadvantage when competing with other countries during the summer season.
Malta’s recovery has been somewhat slower than its Mediterranean counterparts. However, there are hopes that could change this summer.
