Maltese Blind Farmers Are Bringing Flavour To The Island With Delicious Asian Crops

Blind farmers in Malta have decided to help diversify the island’s crop yield by growing and irrigating vegetables from Asia and Africa.

The farmers are growing bitter melon (karela), lady’s fingers (okra), various cujete, and coriander.

The irrigation took place last week at Burmarrad Farm as part of a workshop by the NGO Beyond Light on the perspective of meat and crop tax issues.

Beyond Light is an NGO that seeks to help blind people become more independent and in 2017 they joined forces with Wellbeing Malta in a project promoting agricultural produce and urban pure air.

“These crops are imported to Malta, mainly for Asian consumers living on the island. Therefore, our blind farmers are not in competition with the produce of local farmers and growers,” the NGO explained.

During the workshop, the visual and non-visual farmers studied solutions to avoid the global taxation on meat and crops.

“Our blind farmers and growers are of the opinion that effective microorganism biotechnology agriculture will purify the toxic chemicals across the board in Malta and Gozo.”

In this order, agriculture in Malta will transform into a naturally pure eco-agriculture production centre with scientific prestige that adds value to our local agro economy.”
