Maltese Brother Landscapers Propose Mandatory Greenery On Every Balcony And Rooftop
Two green-thumbed brothers have come up with an interesting proposal to make Malta much greener – mandatory greenery on every rooftop, terrace and balcony.
Ġungla, a young Maltese start-up that was set up by Karl and Andrew Vassallo to focus on landscaping small terraces and apartment balconies, believes that such legislation can be a game-changer for the island.
“Over recent years, Malta’s skyline has been marred by the absence of green spaces, leading to a stark visual and chemical pollution problem,” they told Lovin Malta.
The brothers have come up with two potential proposals to see their vision through.
One would legally oblige contractors to incorporate planters that can survive in the Maltese heat, as well as irrigation systems and greenery into their apartment finishes.
Alternatively, they proposed that the government offers credits to be spent exclusively on greenery from local plant shops, gardeners or landscapers, on the same model as the COVID-19 restaurant vouchers.
Separately, Ġungla proposed subsidising homeowners based on the square meters of outdoor space they have, intended to make balcony-greening accessible and affordable for all
“Recognizing that previous attempts at promoting green buildings faced challenges, Ġungla believes that these new approaches can effectively address the issue,” they said.
“The cumbersome process of organising entire apartment blocks and waiting for rebates is a thing of the past.”
“Ġungla welcomes the opportunity to engage with government officials to discuss and explore the feasibility of these proposals. We are committed to working collaboratively towards a greener, more visually appealing, and ecologically sound Malta.”
