Maltese Church School Urges Students And Parents To Sign Anti-Abortion Bill Petition And Attend Protest
A Maltese church school has sent out an email to students and parents, urging them to sign a petition against a proposed abortion bill and to attend an upcoming protest against them.
“Attached please find an e-flyer which contains information about a petition against the legalisation of abortion in Malta.”
“Everyone is invited to sign the petition and to attend the March for Life which will be held on Sunday 4th December at 3pm at Castille Square,” the email sent out by the head of St Joseph School in Blata l-Bajda read.
The government’s bill will legally allow doctors to terminate pregnancies if they have reason to believe that the mother’s life or health is in danger.
However, concerns have been raised that the vague legal definition of the word “health” could result in the decriminalisation of abortion by stealth, and over 20,000 people have so far signed a petition urging the government to close this potential loophole.
“The government’s abortion amendment is now being discussed in Parliament and will allow abortion for any reason, because it ‘may’ affect the mother’s health,” the petition reads.
“This includes mental health. In the UK, one abortion happens every three minutes for ‘mental health reasons’. If this becomes law, Malta will go from being the best country in Europe for protecting unborn babies to introducing abortion.”
“But this can be stopped – 80 leading medics, lawyers, ethicists, and academics have proposed the Expert Clause, which would change the wording of the proposed law.”
