Maltese Descendant George Caruana Celebrates 50 Years With Australian McDonald’s
George Caruana, a dedicated employee of McDonald’s, is celebrating an incredible milestone: 50 years with the fast-food chain. Despite reaching the age of 69, he shows no signs of slowing down and has no plans to retire anytime soon.
Caruana’s journey with McDonald’s began in 1974 when, as a teenager enjoying lunch with his mother at a newly opened restaurant in Collingwood, Melbourne, fate intervened. The store manager approached him and offered him a job.

Since then, he has been an integral part of the McDonald’s family, holding various roles over the years, including outlet manager and promotions manager. Currently, he serves in customer service at the Lilydale store in Melbourne.
Throughout his five decades of service, Caruana has amassed an impressive collection of McDonald’s memorabilia, showcasing the evolution of the beloved brand. He still treasures the uniform he first wore at the age of 19, symbolising his enduring commitment to the company.
Despite being a diabetic, Caruana remains loyal to McDonald’s, enjoying his favourite meal, a Big Mac and fries, every Saturday during his lunch break. Over the years, he estimates he’s consumed a staggering 38,000 Big Macs and approximately 40,000 french fries.
One of Caruana’s most cherished memories is serving Hollywood icon Bette Davis. Despite encountering numerous notable figures over the years, this encounter stands out as a highlight of his career.
The 69-year-old curates a personal museum at home, displaying decades-worth of McDonald’s memorabilia. Reflecting on his journey, he fondly recalls, “It’s all good memories about the days that I started … and I worked with such great people.” As his 50th anniversary with McDonald’s approaches, plans for celebration remain undisclosed, but retirement is not on his agenda.
Well done George!
